Blocked Drains Granville

Granville is a historic Western Sydney railway town, one of the most multicultural suburbs in Sydney, and it started life as "Parramatta Junction" back when the rail line first split here.

That history sits directly under the ground. Pre-1940 weatherboard and fibro cottages on 500 to 600 square metre blocks still line streets like Railway Parade and Carlton Street.

Those Federation-era homes run on original earthenware sewer pipe, and decades on, the joints have become the weak link. Mature street trees hunting for moisture find them easily.

Newer apartment blocks have gone up more recently near the station, running modern PVC drainage instead. Their problems tend to be simpler, more blockage than structural failure.

It's the older cottage stock that keeps generating call-outs. Once roots get into a cracked clay joint, clearing it buys time, but the pipe itself is often still compromised underneath.

Where that's the case, we assess whether the section needs blocked drain repair or a no-dig reline. Sound lines under ongoing root pressure do better with scheduled drain cleaning instead.

Renters make up a large share of households on these streets, and a landlord managing the job from a distance gets the same plain explanation of the fault as an owner-occupier standing in the yard.

Newer builds bring their own quirks too. A dual-occupancy or subdivided block near the station often means two properties sharing a line that was only ever sized for one, and that shared section is usually where a blockage first shows up.

Two more issues turn up often enough to flag before they become a call-out.

Neither one shows up without warning. A sink that empties slower than usual, or a toilet that gurgles once the rain sets in, is the cue to get it checked.

Renovation season adds a third pattern worth knowing. Older gas fittings and galvanised water pipes often surface once a bathroom or kitchen gets opened up, alongside whatever the drain itself is doing.

We see this most often around Memorial Drive and the streets backing onto Granville Park, where older blocks are being extended or subdivided at a steady clip.

Opening up a wall or a floor there tends to expose more than the job first called for, and it pays to know that going in rather than finding out mid-job.

Auburn is our home turf day to day, and the distance from there to here barely registers on the van's route.

That closeness means a plumber who's actually worked these streets before, not someone guessing at what a South Street cottage has underneath it.

Two things back that up. Nothing charged just for showing up, and a warranty on the work itself that outlasts the invoice.

City of Parramatta sets the rules for this part of the map, and they're rules we already work to on the regular, not something we're brushing up on for the visit.

We're also familiar with the mix of tenants and owner-occupiers on these older blocks, which matters when a rental job needs sign-off from someone who isn't standing in the yard.

This suburb sits within easy reach of Auburn, our home turf, and a handful of other suburbs we're through regularly.

Lidcombe and Berala both sit close by, near enough that a call there is a normal part of the week.

South Granville and Sefton round things out, both getting the same visits as everywhere else on the patch, whether it's a Tuesday afternoon or a Sunday night.
